Top is Eloquence and her colt Pumpkin. Below is Dylan - her yearling colt. The sweet mare gave what she had to give to her babies. The yearling is suffering from malnutrition and a heavy load of parasites; as are all the horses. Pumpkin will not suffer his brothers fate with the support of the SAFER community. He will have a fresh start to his young life. All the horses are young. The oldest is said to be 12. We need experienced volunteers to help halter break these horses - they are in Santa Rosa and Healdsburg. They are not wild or unapproachable.
UPDATE: Little Dylan passed his physical. He must separate from Moma now. We will rehab him at Jodi Richardson's Stable Acres! Thank you to Andria Falcon!
Thanks so much to DebraLea Comstock for transporting and taking in FOUR of these horses - two more than she was prepared for. She is a Horse Angel and has been there with the SAFER horses for some very hard and sad times. The mare and foal will stay with her until adopted. She will get to have some wonderful times with Ely and Pumpkin and she deserves that for sure!
And major thank yous to KIM KRATTINGER of Sebastopol Wranglers for making two trips to transport (in a howling gale...) these guys to their foster homes.

These are the horses that were dumped at the Petaluma auction on April 15th 2013. Most came from a situation up in Lake County that was receiving complaints that were reported to Animal Control about the condition of the horses. At the auction the bidders were clearly looking to flip them for slaughter and the auction owner sold them by the head since they looked so sickly and had so little value. One of them was not a part of the Lake County herd and he was priced by the pound - which is usual. The auctioneer knows SAFER and he knew the score on these guys. He said "God bless you" when we took them all for $25 to $30 a head.
Once you get to know each soul you can see the value clearly in each individual. We hope to be able to help them all achieve health and reach their potential. One is very questionable. There are 2 mares (both mothers), 5 colts; everybody seems related. They are Arab crosses.
We cannot do this alone. This is a lot of horses for us to care for at once - but who should we have left behind for the meat men?? Which one should have been left there without their family to get on a packed truck to a feed lot or straight to Mexico for slaughter? Can you pick? I can't.
All funds must come from the donating community. We do not spend much time raising money - that is our weak point its true. What we really need is for everyone who sees this sad situation and cares to simply give $25; more if you can. A lot of folks giving a little will see them through. They need dental, gelding, shots, halter-breaking, farrier work, much worming, vet care and probably some blood work for some. They need hay and pellets badly. They need saddle training.
And we could use one teeny little halter and one really big one. Got them....
Please call SAFER at 707-824-9543 if you can adopt one of these guys and help them along. That would be the best - or you can sponsor one or more. We also need fosters that will take one of the Yearling/2 yr olds to tame and train. We need to separate them at this time to bring them along as the family horses they need to learn to be. The mare and foal are already fostered.
PayPal is on the front page of the website or snail mail donations can be sent to SAFER 9825 Mill Station Rd Sebastopol CA 95472. Tax receipts will be emailed or mailed. Please be a part of this solution for these suffering souls.

These two have considerable potential. Wouldn't you love to see them in a year all healthy and handsome and ready to become endurance champs! Please help make that a reality.
Update: Blackhawk was haltered and taught to lead by LISA MCELROY his Foster Mom. QUINCY ANDRUS from Lake County will take Blackhawk in for training after his gelding. Thank You Quincy and Lisa!!

To the left is Blackhawk and above is Adrian. You cannot tell them apart except Blackhawk is in much worse condition. They must be full brothers. Two studs that are very bonded to each other; but alas - must be separated now to begin training and to ensure that Blackhawk gets all his nutrition. We cannot thank LISA and RYAN MCELROY enough for stepping up and taking in these two on the fly. Horse Angels of the First Degree. Studs even. Thank God for you guys...

ANDY
Sweet older gelding that is bombproof as they get. With platter feet that will get fixed by Dale Smithson (Farrier Services Therapeutic Shoes 707-228-6463) tomorrow. Someone must have loved him dearly - he adores people and wants attention. (We are talking about the horse here....although Dale is very nice too....)
Hope he is sound - does not seem off but we need to get his feet done for an evaluation by Dr. Robin Kelly (707-775-9501 Equine Vet Mobile Xray and Ultrasound). He is 16 HANDS - huge!! And a hundred pounds overweight...which we will address. How could someones life long companion end up at the auction? His teeth do not seem over 20 - we will see what the doc says. He will melt your heart - and so easy to handle. Someone will scoop him up in a hurry. These are rare - most do not leave their homes or are coveted by others that know them. Perhaps a death in the family....these things happen. UPDATE: Andy is healthy and sound; we are getting his dental done. He is available for adoption. Very placid and easy going and BIG!! He would like a family to love on him after all his hard ranch and roping work....
